Imagine if communities across the U.S. took local action to expand essential monarch habitat across the monarch’s vital breeding and migratory areas. We could give monarchs a fighting chance!

Both the Eastern and Western monarch populations depend on pockets of monarch habitat in our homes, public spaces, towns, and cities. Since the late 1980s, the Eastern monarch population has declined by more than 80%, and the Western monarch population by over 90%, clear signs that monarchs need our help.

By joining the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge network, your local leaders can steer your community towards projects that invest in habitat creation, community science, environmental education, and local policy change to benefit monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

Please be a hero for our beloved monarch butterfly—an iconic species among thousands of pollinators in peril.

Mayors and other heads of local and tribal government—like town and county managers, council members, village and borough presidents, county commissioners, and supervisors—can be champions for monarchs through the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge. I am writing to ask you to join a coalition of local leaders across North America working to protect the monarch butterfly for generations to come.

The Mayors’ Monarch Pledge is currently accepting pledges until March 31, and I hope our community will join this crucial initiative. Since 2015, more than 2,400 pledges have been taken, and these signatories have engaged more than 16 million people and restored or enhanced more than 12,100 acres of habitat.

With our nation’s migratory monarch butterfly populations dwindling, leaders like yourself hold the key to rallying our community around critical conservation efforts that can help this imperiled pollinator. The Mayors’ Monarch Pledge provides a proven framework intended to support efforts to create and expand habitat for monarchs and other wildlife, where people live, work, learn, play, and worship.

Implementing the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in our community involves three main steps:

1.     Take the online pledge by March 31 each year and select at least 3 action items out of 30 that our community will work on related to monarch conservation: https://mayorsmonarchportal.nwf.org/
2.     Initiate the specified actions our community selected throughout the year.
3.     Track and report our progress by submitting an annual report by December 1.
