Ignoring emissions doesn’t make them disappear, and not tracking pollution doesn’t make people and wildlife healthier. But the federal government is proposing to essentially eliminate emissions reporting requirements for large industrial facilities.

We know that climate change is threatening the health and well-being of people and wildlife like caribou and beloved birds – from changes in wildlife migration patterns to extending allergy seasons and the proliferation of disease carrying pests. The Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program requires thousands of industrial facilities–like fuel and gas suppliers, petrochemical producers, and coal mines– to report the large amounts of emissions they release into our air every year. This allows us to monitor and reduce the dangerous pollution that is contributing to climate change and its harmful environmental and health impacts.

Tell the Environmental Protection Agency that ignoring a problem does not make it go away, and that they must not eliminate the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.

Dear Administrator Zeldin,

Climate change is a known public health threat, and climate-altering pollution still harms us even if we don’t track it.  I am writing to urge you to uphold the Environmental Protection Agency’s responsibility to protect public health from pollution by NOT rolling back the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program as is proposed in docket no. EPA-HQ-OAR-2025-0186.

The Greenhouse Gas Reporting program, under the Clean Air Act, requires large sources of greenhouse gas pollution to report their emissions. If finalized, large facilities from petrochemical and cement production to oil and gas systems to underground coal mines would no longer be required to disclose their dangerous climate-altering pollution.

State and local governments, as well as the EPA itself, use the data from the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program to establish their own regulations and emitting limits. The program has collected data since 2009 covering a broad scope of pollution, allowing the government to track increases and decreases over time, as well as progress towards a healthier nation for our people and wildlife. Without these reporting requirements in place, we will be left in the dark about how much dangerous climate-altering pollution is entering our air and will be unable to track it alongside health trends.

We cannot curb emissions, tackle climate change, protect public health, and defend wildlife if we do not know where emissions are coming from and in what quantities. Our policies should be based in sound science. Ignoring a problem does not make it go away and not monitoring pollution doesn’t make people healthier–in fact, it does the opposite. The Environmental Protection Agency must not abandon its responsibility to keep people safe, and must not end the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.
