Speak out for balanced land management plans that safeguard wildlife

Bald eagles and other wildlife depend on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. That agency develops careful stewardship plans by consulting with local leaders, ranchers, businesses, and recreationists to balance development with conservation. Now Congress wants to destroy these carefully created land management plans.

Dear Senator,

I’m very concerned that Congress is trying to undercut careful stewardship of our public lands. Resource management plans are developed by the Bureau of Land Management in consultation with local and Indigenous leaders, ranchers, industry representatives, and recreationists so the lands remain healthy and productive for generations to come. Those plans allow for responsible development while safeguarding wildlife habitat and clean water.

As you know, the House of Representatives just voted to scrap these plans in Alaska, Montana, and North Dakota by using the Congressional Review Act. This unprecedented and potentially illegal maneuver not only destroys those specific plans, but it also may prevent any of the proposals in those plans from ever being proposed again. That means that even vital and effective plans to safeguard clean water might be forbidden in the future.

Such unintended consequences could throw public lands management into disarray. If there are proposals in management plans that Congress doesn’t like, it should use the existing process to work with Interior Secretary Burgum to amend the plans. Don’t destroy them. And don’t undercut the authority of the Interior Secretary to do the work that he is tasked with doing.

I urge you to oppose any efforts to use the Congressional Review Act to destroy balanced land management plans that protect wildlife and clean water.
