I strongly support advancing a surface transportation bill that prioritizes initiatives aimed at improving habitat connectivity and human safety.

Across America, wildlife habitat is being fragmented, lost, and degraded, leaving many species with fewer, smaller, and more isolated areas to live and migrate. This habitat fragmentation impedes the movement of migratory and transitory species, from large mammals to fish and turtles, making it difficult for them to travel between critical areas. Roads that cut through these migration paths also present a significant threat to human safety. Each year, wildlife-vehicle collisions result in over $8 billion in damages and cause thousands of injuries to drivers and passengers.

The last infrastructure package took important steps to address this issue by including a comprehensive set of policies and resources designed to make our roads safer for both people and wildlife. A key example is the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program, which established a $350 million competitive grant program for states and Tribal nations to implement wildlife crossing projects that reduce collisions and improve habitat connectivity. This program has been extremely popular, with demand far exceeding available funding.

I urge the U.S. Department of Transportation and the 119th Congress to make the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program permanent and increase the funding to expand these essential on-the-ground projects that benefit both public safety and wildlife conservation.
