Ensure Habitat Funding for California’s Wildlife

Western burrowing owls in California are in dire need of habitat protection to halt their population decline. Mountain lions rely on projects like the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing to prevent isolation. Steelhead trout and salmon require restored and protected waterways to continue to swim throughout the state’s waters.

California’s Habitat Conservation Fund provides funding to projects that support habitats for all of these species and more. The annual appropriation to this fund is currently set to end in 2030, but legislation pending in Sacramento would make a permanent commitment to these investments.

The Habitat Conservation Fund has been a successful resource for California’s wildlife, landscapes, and recreational opportunities for the past 35 years. I am writing to urge you to vote yes on SB 427 to remove the 2030 sunset date on the annual appropriation, and make the Habitat Conservation Fund a permanent funding source for future generations.

Since voters approved Proposition 117 in 1990, the Habitat Conservation Fund has provided over $1 billion for projects led by state and local agencies, nonprofits, and other organizations. It has played a key role in preserving California’s biodiversity and ensuring the long-term health of its natural resources for future generations, protecting more than 1.2 million acres of wildlife habitat across the state.

Among the many projects it has supported is the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing in Agoura Hills, which will be the largest wildlife crossing in the world and will play a crucial role in saving the area’s mountain lion population from extinction. It has also dedicated $12.4 million to acquire, restore, and enhance 48 miles of salmon and steelhead trout habitat on Battle Creek and its tributaries. Other projects fund the preservation and management of parkland, wildlife habitat, coastal access, and trails in urban and rural settings in counties across California.

Please vote yes on SB 427 so California’s wildlife and people can enjoy access to healthy habitats for years to come.
