Habitat loss is a primary threat to the survival of wildlife in the United States. Despite this reality, federal agencies are proposing to remove language that protects the habitats of listed species under the Endangered Species Act. Endangered and threatened wildlife across the country could plummet towards extinction if this change to the Endangered Species Act is made, opening up precious wildlife habitat for development and destruction.

I am submitting this comment to voice my opposition to the rescindment of the definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act. This proposal ignores the essential fact — known to hunters, anglers, biologists, and even casual observers — that wildlife cannot exist without habitat and vice versa. The loss of habitat is a leading reason that species decline in our country.

The Endangered Species Act has an impressive track record as one of the most effective and successful conservation laws in the United States. Its ability to not only protect wildlife, but also the habitats that struggling species need to survive, is a huge factor in its ability to save 99% of listed species. I am urging you to keep the Endangered Species Act strong, and not remove this essential provision that protects species habitat, thereby also protecting listed species.

Many federally listed endangered and threatened species all across the country could suffer from this proposed change to Endangered Species Act rules. Some species could be lost forever. Please do not proceed with this proposal to rescind the definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act.
