Recent federal actions reversing investments in environmental justice work are putting frontline and fenceline communities at risk of toxic pollution and continued environmental health disparities. Congress must step in to safeguard communities at risk of toxic pollution and help end environmental health disparities across the country.

Closing the Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights Office (OEJECR) and 10 other regional environmental justice offices at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will have damaging consequences for millions of Americans. I am urging you to support the passage of the Empowering and Enforcing Environmental Justice Act of 2025 (H.R.1553/S.720), which would give the Department of Justice statutory authority to establish an Office of Environmental Justice and create grants to improve the capacity of state, local, and tribal governments to enforce environmental laws involving environmental justice matters.

Many communities are tirelessly working to address environmental, climate, and health issues in their neighborhoods. Originally founded in 1992 under a Republican administration as the Office of Environmental Justice, OEJECR has been an example of a nonpartisan effort to support hardworking communities overburdened by pollution and environmental degradation. Continued federal investment in these efforts will ensure a healthier, more resilient future for all generations to come. From the mountains of Appalachia to the California coast, committing to environmental justice is critical to building a thriving, equitable nation.
