I urge you to protect the Great Lakes’ irreplaceable wildlife by requiring a full bottomlands permit under the Submerged Lands Act for Enbridge's proposal, which will blast and drill through the bottomlands of the Great Lakes. Enbridge does not have the right to build a tunnel without a bottomlands lease.

The Great Lakes are home to the lake sturgeon—one of the most ancient and unique species in North America. These gentle giants, once abundant in Michigan’s waters, are state-listed as a threatened species due to threats such as habitat destruction and pollution.

Building a tunnel to house part of the Line 5 pipeline–which is already 72 years old– would devastate wetlands and aquatic habitats crucial for sturgeon spawning and survival.

Beyond its ecological impact, this project deepens our reliance on fossil fuels and risks catastrophic explosions from natural gas liquids, shifting long-term financial and environmental liabilities to Michigan taxpayers. By potentially bypassing full permitting requirements for the use of bottomlands, the state is signaling that corporate interests can outweigh the need for rigorous environmental scrutiny.
