I urge you to protect the Great Lakes’ irreplaceable wildlife by upholding your duty under the Great Lakes Submerged Lands Act to require comprehensive permitting that considers the environmental effects of the entire project, and consider a full set of alternatives to the project, including the orderly shut down of Line 5.

The Great Lakes are home to the lake sturgeon—one of the most ancient and unique species in North America. These gentle giants, once abundant in Michigan’s waters, are state-listed as a threatened species due to threats such as habitat destruction and pollution.

Building a tunnel to house part of the Line 5 pipeline–which is already 72 years old– would devastate wetlands and aquatic habitats crucial for sturgeon spawning and survival.

Beyond its ecological impact, this project deepens our reliance on fossil fuels and risks catastrophic explosions from natural gas liquids, shifting long-term financial and environmental liabilities to Michigan taxpayers. By potentially bypassing full permitting requirements for the use of bottomlands, the state is signaling that corporate interests can outweigh the need for rigorous environmental scrutiny.

Your leadership is essential to prioritize Michigan’s natural resources, protect the lake sturgeon and other species, and ensure a sustainable future. The tunnel locks Michigan into fossil fuel dependency while risking our lakes and livelihoods. We urge EGLE to reject rushed approvals and uphold Great Lakes laws that protect our shared future.
