Dear Governor,

Last August politicians in Utah filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court asking the federal government to dispose of America’s public lands. And 13 other states supported this misguided initiative. Fortunately, the Supreme Court refused to hear the case. But we know that Utah is now going to try to file it in a lower district court.

I’m proud that you have been a strong public lands champion and have not supported this misguided action that jeopardizes the very existence of 640 million acres of public land all over the United States.

If this effort is successful, all public lands could be put up for auction to the highest bidder. It would be a disaster for wildlife, Indigenous communities, local economies, and for the millions of people who depend on public lands for their livelihoods or for recreation.

Public lands are places of refuge, recreation, and inspiration. Their beauty and cultural significance cannot be replicated. Public lands foster a sense of connection to the natural world and provide generations of families in the U.S. the opportunity to experience nature.

It’s time to put a stop to this notion that our cherished lands should be auctioned to the highest bidder. Please continue to champion our lands and our legacy!
