Remaining forests in the Brazilian Amazon are at risk of being cleared and burned to make way for additional soy plantations. Tomorrow, the Brazilian soy industry will vote on whether they will weaken the provisions of the Amazon Soy Moratorium that is saving old-growth forests. This change will create loopholes that would threaten the habitat that jaguars and many other species depend on. There is absolutely no need to weaken an industry initiative that has been working so well by creating loopholes that could allow unnecessary destruction, and threaten even further the habitat of so many species and our climate. Dear Soy Industry Leaders,

I want to thank and congratulate you for being a founder, supporter, and implementer of the Amazon Soy Moratorium since its inception in 2006. The Moratorium has been incredibly effective, protecting 7,000 square miles of Amazon forest in its first 10 years alone, while Brazil was still able to expand its soy production on land that was already cleared, thereby enabling the soy industry to thrive, and safeguarding livelihoods, forests, and food security. Your efforts ensured that buyers from around the world know they can purchase Brazilian soy while assured that its wildlife-rich forests are being protected.

Brazil has 52 million acres of land that has already been cleared that could be used for soy production, so continuing the Soy Moratorium in its current form will protect forests without hampering production over decades to come. As Brazil prepares to show global leadership on conserving biodiversity at next year’s international United Nations climate conference, the success of the Amazon Soy Moratorium will be showcased for playing a role in Brazil’s recently published climate plan that will be highlighted at the conference.

International markets are increasingly preferentially purchasing products that can be shown to meet environmental and social standards, such as a new European regulation on deforestation-free products. With the eyes of the world turning to Brazil’s efforts to conserve the globally vital Amazon next year, the soy industry’s continuation and safeguarding of its keystone initiative will be on display. On December 10th, the Brazilian soy industry will vote on whether to maintain or change the rules of the Soy Moratorium. I therefore want to encourage you to maintain the high standards and forest protections that the Soy Moratorium has so successfully implemented for over 18 years—and vote accordingly.
