Dear Governor,

As I’m sure you know, politicians in Utah have filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court asking the federal government to dispose of America’s public lands. And now 13 other states have joined in on this misguided initiative.

I’m proud that elected officials in our state have not recklessly moved to support this perilous lawsuit. This action jeopardizes the very existence of 640 million acres of public land all over the United States.

Utah says it only wants 18.5 million acres of BLM lands in Utah. However, it also claims that the federal government can only constitutionally own property for military bases and the nation’s capital. By that logic, the federal government couldn’t own any BLM land in Utah. Nor could it own national parks, monuments, forests, or wildlife refuges anywhere in the United States.

If this effort is successful, those lands could be put up for auction to the highest bidder. It would be a disaster for wildlife, Indigenous communities, local economies, and for the millions of people who depend on public lands for their livelihoods or for recreation.

The concept of selling off these lands goes directly against public opinion. The Conservation in the West poll has consistently found that upwards of 80% of Western voters believe that public lands are essential to their state’s economy.

It’s time to put a stop to this notion that our cherished lands should be auctioned to the highest bidder. Please continue to champion our lands and our legacy!
