Buffalo herds are not only emblematic of the plains and prairies of the American west, they are also ecologically and culturally significant to Tribes and their lands. The Indian Buffalo Management Act would secure funding and resources to support existing buffalo herds and to establish new herds on Tribal lands where historic buffalo populations have been decimated.

I’m writing today to encourage your support for the bipartisan Indian Buffalo Management Act.

This legislation would create a permanent buffalo program within the Department of the Interior to promote Tribal ownership and management of buffalo and their habitat on Tribal lands. It also ensures Tribal nations and Tribal organizations are included in decisions the Department of the Interior makes related to the management of buffalo.

The Indian Buffalo Management Act is an important step this Congress can take to support the cultural and ecological significance of buffalo. Besides being an iconic American species, buffalo give back to their environments—studies show that reintroducing bison to prairie landscapes doubles plant diversity. They help create watering holes in dry regions, their fur can carry seeds long distances, and their hooves help turn over the soil to plant these seeds.
