Wildlife need strong Farm Bill Conservation Programs

Farm Bill conservation programs are America’s largest source of funds to help farmers and ranchers adopt wildlife-friendly practices that protect our soil, water, and climate. In 2023, these USDA conservation programs applied to over 53 million acres of land. Conservation funding helps farmers, ranchers, foresters, and private landowners restore wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands, reduce their chemical use, and rebuild healthy soil.

Tell your members of Congress to protect climate-smart conservation funding in the Farm Bill. From the monarch butterfly and native bees to bobwhite quail, wild turkey, largemouth bass, and whitetail deer, a host of fish and wildlife in every state benefit from Farm Bill Conservation Programs and Inflation Reduction Act climate-smart conservation funding.

Farm Bill conservation programs provide huge benefits for farmers, and for all of us who appreciate cleaner water, abundant fish and wildlife, a healthy climate, and strong rural communities. As Congress considers the next Farm Bill, I urge you to ensure that it protects soil, water, wildlife, the climate, and people alike.

In 2022, Congress promised farmers and ranchers nearly $20 billion to help them implement climate-smart conservation practices that protect our soil, water, and wildlife. The funds are badly needed because, due to a lack of sufficient funding, the Department of Agriculture has been turning away two-thirds of the farmers who apply for help to implement new conservation measures that improve water quality and soil health, mitigate the impacts of floods and drought, make their operations more resilient, energize rural communities, and empower American agriculture to lead on climate. Farmers and ranchers are signing up in record numbers to do their part for our natural resources.

I urge you to follow through on this important promise to America’s farmers and ranchers by protecting this vital conservation funding. It’s critical that Congress works together on a bipartisan Farm Bill that makes the Inflation Reduction Act’s conservation funding permanent, including strong climate-smart guardrails, and has strong provisions for wildlife and communities. America’s farmers, rural communities, and all of us who value clean water, abundant wildlife, and a healthy climate are counting on you.
