Dear Director Tracy Stone-Manning,

Thank you for proposing long-overdue reforms to the greater sage-grouse resource management plans. I believe that your plan is balanced, based on the best available science, and allows for flexibility for state land managers.

As you know, satellite mapping shows that we are losing nearly 1.3 million acres of sagebrush habitat each year. We cannot sit by and watch this important ecosystem disappear.

Sagebrush country is home to more than 350 plants and animal species of conservation concern. Its most famous occupant, the greater sage-grouse, has seen a decline from an estimated 16 million to as few as 200,000 birds.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists have said that small incremental changes to existing conservation efforts will not abate the expected loss in sagebrush ecological integrity. Your agency must take bold action to conserve the healthy habitat that remains and restore lands that have been degraded. You must tackle invasive grasses, poorly planned energy development, and inadequate coordination among land managers.

A healthy sagebrush landscape is not only imperative to saving greater sage-grouse and other wildlife, it is an integral part of the culture and economy of the West. I support your proposed plan. Thank you for working to conserve this vitally important ecosystem.
