The bog turtle, North America's smallest turtle at just 4.5 inches, has distinctive patches that range in color from yellow to red on either side of its head. Sadly, this charming species is federally threatened, grappling with habitat loss and fragmentation due to extensive land-use changes. Crucially, bog turtles rely on healthy watershed wetlands, making their decline indicative of broader ecosystem issues. Urgent conservation efforts are needed to protect these turtles. Act now for watershed preservation to secure a future for the bog turtle.

As a person who relies on the Delaware River Watershed for clean drinking water, I’m writing in support of $17 million for the Delaware River Basin Restoration Program (DRBRP) in the final FY25 funding bill.

The Delaware River Basin Restoration Program is a smart investment in conserving and restoring our vital natural resources. Since 2018, grant funding deployed through the program has supported 195 projects across the watershed, totaling $55.1 million in grants and leveraging an additional $79.2 million in matching funds, for a total conservation impact of $134.3 million. Projects include those that improve public access and recreational opportunities, support restoring and protecting vulnerable fish and wildlife habitat, and protect riparian, stream, and wetland habitat. Each year, however, there’s more on-the ground demand than what the program can fund. Therefore, we need more appropriated dollars allocated to DRBRP to ensure that habitats and communities throughout the region continue to be invested in.

As you work to finalize funding for FY 2025, I applaud and support $17 million for the DRBRP. These critical dollars go a long way toward supporting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s work to protect one of the most precious natural resources on the East Coast. As a constituent, I appreciate your attention to this important funding request.
