The future of the monarch butterfly depends on local efforts to plant and restore native milkweed and nectar plants in home landscapes, public spaces, towns, and cities. Your local leaders can help by joining a network of hundreds of U.S. cities and communities that are investing in habitat restoration, community science, environmental education, and local policy change to benefit monarch butterflies.

You have the power to be a hero for our beloved monarch butterfly-- an iconic species among thousands of pollinators in peril. I am writing to encourage you to take the National Wildlife Federation’s “Mayors’ Monarch Pledge” and join a national coalition of local leaders across the U.S. working to protect the monarch butterfly for generations to come.

The Mayor’s Monarch Pledge is currently accepting pledges until April 30th, and I hope you will consider adding your name to this crucial initiative.

With our nation’s migratory monarch butterfly populations dwindling, leaders like yourself hold the key to rallying our community around critical conservation efforts that can help this imperiled pollinator. Since 2015, the more than 1,200 Mayors’ Monarch Pledge signatories have engaged 9 million people and restored or enhanced more than 10,000 acres of habitat.

When you sign the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge you get access to a proven framework intended to support your efforts to restore and enhance habitat for monarchs and other wildlife, where people live, work, learn, play and worship.

To implement the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in our community, the program involves three main steps:

1. A local leader takes the online pledge between December 1 and April 30th each year and selects at least 3 monarch conservation action items out of 30 that your community will work on:

2. Initiate the specified actions your community selected throughout the year.

3. Track and report your progress by submitting an annual report by December 1.
