Shutdown Line 5 for Piping Plovers

The piping plover, an endangered shorebird that nests along the shores of the Great Lakes, has been seeing a resurgence in numbers over the past few years. But the Line 5 oil pipeline threatens their habitats and could reverse the progress made in their recovery.

Enbridge’s Line 5 has been called America’s most dangerous oil pipeline. It not only threatens the Great Lakes but Enbridge and the Canadian federal government are using the pipeline to establish a legal precedent that creates additional risks to the Great Lakes.

Please send a message urging President Biden to revoke Line 5’s permit.

Dear President Biden,

The Line 5 oil pipeline poses a huge risk to the people and wildlife of the Great Lakes, while contributing to climate change. Oil spills into the Great lakes would threaten the drinking water of 40 million people while harming critical habitat for endangered species.

I strongly urge you to take the following actions regarding the ongoing dispute over Enbridge Energy’s outdated and dangerous Line 5 pipeline:

●	Revoke the presidential permit for the Line 5 pipeline - the presidential permit is predicated upon Enbridge’s compliance with their easement agreement with Michigan. Enbridge violated that easement from 1968 until Governor Whitmer revoked it in 2020.
●	File supportive briefs in the appropriate court of jurisdiction, making it clear that Michigan has the authority to revoke the Line 5 easement and shut down the pipeline.
●	Prevent improper use of the 1977 Transit Pipeline Treaty with Canada - Canadian attempts to keep Line 5 operating by invoking the Treaty are ill-founded and disingenuous. The 4th article of the treaty allows the exact kind of conduct to protect the environment and public trust resources pursued by Governor Whitmer and the Bad River Band.
●	Follow the global commitment of COP28 to begin transitioning away from fossil fuels. Future generations are counting on you.

This administration must protect our water and start taking action on climate change. Please take these actions today.
