Wetlands—marshes, bogs, and swamps—provide essential habitat for fish, waterfowl like the wood duck, and other wildlife, and one-third of threatened or endangered species depend on these crucial waters for survival. In addition to providing habitat, wetlands also filter water and absorb and manage floodwaters, protecting communities from flooding and recharging groundwater and drinking water supplies.

But due to a recent rollback in protections, our wetlands are at a greater risk of pollution and destruction than ever before. Please speak out.

I am reaching out to share that I am very concerned about the recent rollbacks in protections for wetlands and other waters, and to ask for your leadership in restoring protections for these features   in our state and across the country. The 2023 Supreme Court ruling in Sackett v. EPA removed federal Clean Water Act protections for the majority of our nation’s wetlands and up to almost 5 million miles of streams. Congress must step up to restore these historic protections. In the meantime, states must fill the gaping hole in water protections.

Marshes, bogs, swamps, and other wetlands are the kidneys and sponges of our water systems. They naturally filter pollutants out of the water that flows from our taps. Wetlands absorb water and slowly release it throughout the year – recharging groundwater and sustaining drinking water supplies. Protecting and restoring wetlands helps mitigate the damage from increasingly severe storms and floods, which continue to disproportionately impact socially vulnerable communities.

Wetlands play an enormous and low-cost role in absorbing floodwaters, with one single acre of wetland able to store up to 1.5 million gallons of floodwaters that would otherwise quickly rush downstream. They are also among the most productive ecosystems on earth and provide vital habitat for fish and wildlife, with one-third of threatened or endangered species depending on wetlands for their survival.

At a time when we need the natural benefits of wetlands the most, the Sackett Supreme Court decision has left nearly two-thirds of our remaining wetlands open to unchecked pollution and destruction.

From drinking water and outdoor recreation to cultural traditions and farming, clean water is essential to our way of life. I urge you to support efforts to restore and protect wetlands and streams in our state and across the country.
