Tell Your Senators: 12,000 Species of Wildlife Need Help

Wildlife—from butterflies to birds to bighorn sheep—are facing intense and interwoven threats: habitats are increasingly fragmented and degraded, invasive species and wildlife diseases are spreading, new sources of pollution are emerging, and extreme wildfires, droughts, heatwaves, flooding, and hurricanes are ravaging the landscape. Climate change is only accelerating the decline of our most beloved species.

Today, we urgently need senators to step up for the one-third of all species of wildlife, fish, and plants facing heightened risks of extinction.

I urge you to fully support and vote to pass the strongly bipartisan Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.

Right now, more than one-third of our fish and wildlife species are at risk of becoming extinct. We have already lost more than 150 species that are presumed extinct and another 500 species are missing in action. State fish and wildlife agencies have identified more than 12,000 Species of Greatest Conservation Need. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act will accelerate the recovery of these species by giving state and Tribal wildlife agencies the resources they need to take collaborative conservation actions early, before a species nears the brink of extinction.

This cost-effective approach will benefit people and wildlife across the United States, from cities to suburbs to rural communities. Through efforts to conserve and restore habitat that wildlife depends on in every state, people like me will have more opportunities to hike, kayak, canoe, camp, fish, enjoy a beach or just take in nature and all that it has to offer—which will also strengthen the outdoor recreation economy and preserve our outdoor heritage for future generations.

America has a proud history of coming together to bring wildlife back from the threat of extinction. The challenges facing fish and wildlife today are daunting, but more than 1,800 businesses and conservation interests agree that we can build on our nation’s conservation legacy by passing the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.
