After leaking over a million gallons of natural gas liquids, it’s time to stop Line 5

1.3 million gallons of natural gas liquids leaked out of Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline in northern Wisconsin.

Following the spill in Wisconsin, Michigan officials should also be asking why they would trust the same company, with the same track record, to bore a tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac, one of the most sensitive freshwater ecosystems on Earth.

Tell the governors of Wisconsin and Michigan to stop Line 5 before any more damage is done.

Dear Governors Whitmer and Evers,

Last week the Line 5 oil pipeline leaked over 1.3 million gallons of natural gas liquids in northern Wisconsin. It’s time to shut down Line 5 for good to protect the people and wildlife that live around the Great Lakes and are at risk of further pollution.

The Bad River Band has been forced to live under the threat of a Line 5 rupture on their land and waters for decades already, and this leak has proven that the reroute does not remove the threat of a massive oil spill into their watershed and Lake Superior.

The Michigan Supreme Court also ruled that the Line 5 tunnel permit in the Straits of Mackinac was unlawful. Building this tunnel to house the over 70-year-old Line 5 pipeline would devastate wetlands and aquatic habitats crucial for at-risk wildlife species and threaten the drinking water of millions of people.

I'm asking you to withdraw your administrations’ support for Line 5 and take the next step your citizens and Tribal Nations have been calling for and commit to shutting down Line 5.

Every day this pipeline keeps running is another day of risk to the Great Lakes, to the Straits of Mackinac, and to the drinking water and livelihoods of millions of people.
