Take Action for Pacific Fishers and Forest Research

The forest-dwelling Pacific fisher, once on the verge of extinction, is slowly recovering in the face of increasing loss of old growth forest habitat and trees in our national forests, high-severity wildfires, and rodenticide exposure. But recent proposals to eliminate all funding for the U.S. Forest Service research program and reorganize the agency endanger vital efforts that save the forests this species, and so many others, need to survive.

Critical Forest Service research that helps reduce wildfire risk, restore forests, protect watersheds, and conserve wildlife would stop. Please urge Congress to reject these proposals and to stand up for strong support for the Forest Service research program.

I am calling on you to reject harmful budget cuts and agency reorganizations that threaten to end the the U.S. Forest Service research program. I do not want the significant Forest Service research that helps reduce wildfire risk, restore forests, protect watersheds, conserve wildlife, and ensure ways for all of us to connect with nature to stop or be reduced.

For example, the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region has conducted collaborative research examining how forest management activities relate to Pacific fishers and their forest habitat. Findings from Forest Service scientific research studies have shown that a mosaic of forest types are used by fishers, and that the animals respond favorably when forests retain key structural components. If funding for scientific forest research is cut and key facilities are eliminated, crucial research to save wildlife will cease—and species that I care about, like Pacific fishers, will lose.

I am counting on you to reject the FY2027 budget request that would eliminate the U.S. Forest Service research program, maintain strong funding for the program, and stand up to preserve key U.S. Forest Service research facilities so that the service can continue to support healthy forests for wildlife. Thank you.
